King Tutankhamun: The Boy Pharaoh
One of the most famous pharaohs in our day and age is the boy pharaoh, King Tutankhamun. He was born Akhetaten in 1346 B.C. , and ascended to the throne when he was just nine years old. After he became pharaoh he married his sister, which was a normal thing to do in ancient Egypt. Tutankhamun ruled for nine long years, until he died when he was just 18 years old. He was then buried in the Valley of Kings in Thebes.
There are many different ideas surrounding his death. One of the ways that King Tutankhamun could have died was that he was bludgeoned to death. Bone fragments were found in his skull that suggest this. Another way that he could have died was from a broken leg. A CT scan of his mummy showed that he had a thin coating of embalming resin around the leg break, suggesting that Tutankhamun broke his leg just before he died and that his death may have resulted from from an infection or other complications. There were also many baskets and jars in his tomb that were filled with medicinal herbs to cure headaches and fevers, which shows that he might have been sick when he died.
After Tutanhamun died, a funeral was made quickly and he was forgotten about. That is, until Howard Carter came along in 1922, 3000 years after his death. We know him today thanks to Howard Carter; an archaeologist from England. Carter was paid by Lord Carnavon. At that point in time, everyone thought that there were no more tombs to find, but Carter believed that there had to be more tombs. He was in Egypt for a long period of time, and decided to leave. When he left, he visited a museum which had artifacts from King Tut's tomb. This gave Carter hope again and he came back to Egypt to try to find the tomb. He then found Tutankhamun's tomb which was buried beneath King Ramses VI's tomb. On Saturday, November 4, 1922 the steps to the tomb had been found. Carter knew this was it, but unfortunately he could not open the tomb because he had to wait for Lord Carnavon to arrive.
Three weeks later, Lord Carnavon and his daughter arrived in Egypt. When they opened the tomb though, they noticed something that scared them. They noticed that the doorway had been broken through and resealed. But, it had not been broken into luckily. Everything was intact, the tomb itself was beautiful.
Unfortunately though, something evil was lurking around the corners. A curse had been cast on whoever had opened the the tomb. This was called the "Mummy's Curse". Many people believe that this curse is real because of several factors. The first, being that Lord Carnavon & his daughter die after the tomb was opened. The second was that Carter's secretary dies, and Carter's father dies due to a hearse running over someone. All 23 people who were associated with the tomb died - except for Carter, who died of old age.
