The Pyramids and Tombs
Pyramids and Tombs - well, what are they really? Pyramids were tombs which were where the Egyptians buried their dead (also known as mummies). The pyramids were made out of huge blocks of stone, and were piled on top of each other so that it would form a square - based pyramid. Inside these pyramids, there would be beautiful sarcophaguses, along with a lot of treasure and art.
The First Pyramid
Before pyramids were created, people were buried in pit graves, which were shallow and usually round/oval shaped. The body would be in the fetal position, and with the body would be some mere possions that could be used in the afterlife. The Step Pyramid, aka the Pyramid of Djoser was the first pyramid to be created after pit graves. . It was built in 2300 BCE, 5000 years ago. It remains in Saqqara, a place not too far from Memphis, Egypt. It was built during the 27th century BC for Pharoah Djoser.
The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the most famous of the pyramids in Ancient Egypt. It is also known as Pyramid of Khufu or Pyramid of Cheops. It covers almost an entire city block. It was built for the Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek) in 2650 BC. It is 459 feet high, and there are over 2 300 000 blocks in this pyramid. It is estimated that the granite blocks weigh 2 tonnes or 4000 lbs each. There are enough blocks to build a 10 foot wall around the country of France or go two thirds the way around the equator with one foot blocks.
Both pyramids are magnificent and beautiful, but there is a question about both of them that many people ask. "How would you make a pyramid?" Well, there are two possibilities. One possibility was that the aliens built the pyramids, which really isn't a possibility at all (because aliens don't want to build a tomb for the pharaohs . The more likely possibility was that the ancient Egyptians used ramps to build their pyramids. But the ramps would go around the pyramid instead of straight across, as this was much more efficient and effective. These ramps would be bigger than the pyramid itself. The people who made the pyramid used hammers and chisels, and moved the blocks in place with sleds and ropes.
Pyramids are breath-taking on the outside, but they're also that way on the inside as well. Once you enter the pyramid, the first thing you'll see is a hall. And multiple halls at that. These halls would lead to a room with the actual mummy, and other rooms with treasures. The room with the mummy had the sarcophagus, and some of the treasures would be furniture, sculptures, or medicine. Other rooms would just have items that would be nescessary for the afterlife.
